Helping to Preserve Vermont's Archaeological
and Historic Resources

Who are we and what do we do?

We are located within the Program Development Division (PDD) of the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) and are part of the Environmental Section. This section is responsible for acquiring the necessary environmental permits for agency projects.

Our Cultural Resource Team is comprised of a Historic Preservation Officer, Historic Preservation Specialist, Archaeology Officer, and Assistant Archaeologist. We are responsible for assessing the extent of potential impacts on historic structures and archaeological sites.  We also provide recommendations and guidance to the project managers concerning how to avoid, minimize, or mitigate for any impacts to these resources.

A portion of this work often includes, but is not limited to, photo-documentation of an historic structure or determining if an area is sensitive for archaeological resources.

Federal and State laws and regulations have been in place for more than 30 years to help in the protection and preservation of our important archaeological and historic resources. We review projects according to the standards within Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Advisory Council's Regulations on Protection of Historic Properties (36 CFR 800). For more information about laws protecting historic and archaeological resources, please visit
A Citizen's Guide to Section 106 Review provided by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
