Roadway Design Unit

The Roadway Design Unit is responsible for the development of plans for the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and new construction of roadways.  The Section is organized into design teams, each supervised by a Project Manager. Two teams are located at the VTrans Central Office in Montpelier, and one in Bennington. The primary responsibilities of the Roadway Design Unit include:


  the review of alternatives and the recommendation of a preferred alignment and design based on engineering judgment, applicable guidelines, and the views of affected parties.

  the design and detail of all features of the roadway, including lane and shoulder widths, surface thickness and materials, guardrail, and erosion control features.

  the determination of the estimated pay quantities.

  the preparation of the engineer's cost estimate.

 the organization of required hearings and meetings and the providing of testimony and information at these hearings and meetings.

 the assistance of  Agency units in the development of or the review of landscaping details for any Agency-sponsored projects.
