New Book:

Crossings: A History of Vermont Bridges

By: Robert McCoullough

Now available from the Vermont Historical Society for $24.95 Crossings: A History of Vermont Bridges is a must read for anyone interested in Transportation History.  After leaving Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, Bob McCoullough started working for VTrans in 1992 and after almost a decade of service left to teach at the University of Vermont in the Historic Preservation Program.  He still assists VTrans with the Historic Truss Bridge Adaptive-Use Program which was one of the first in the nation agreements of this type amongst the 50 State DOT's.  Bob's passion for old bridges and buildings comes through loud and clear in this nicely illustrated book.  The book carries the reader through history from the earliest bridges in Vermont to the Interstate Highway Era which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in June 2006.

War of 1812 Burial Ground:

North End

Since 1812, Burlington has grown considerably.  Even by the very early 1900's, many graves had been forgotten and developed over.  When VTrans decided to do some work on North Street, we were very surprised to find what we did.

An Intern’s Perspective

I applied for the internship with the Environmental Section's Archaeology team after getting an email from the Anthropology department at the University of Vermont, and was hired in April.  I didn’t really know what to expect coming into it, because, like many Anthropology majors, I didn’t know what I was going to do with my major, or how I would apply what I have learned in a working environment.  I knew from my interview and the job description that I would be spending about half of my time in the field, and half of my time in the office.
