What is an Environmental Biologist?

There are two biologists within the Environmental Section.  Each one oversees transportation projects in an assigned region of the state and performs environmental assessment work involving the evaluation of the impact of proposed transportations projects upon wetlands, fisheries, wildlife, and threatened or endangered species and their habitats.   The biologist prepares applications and provides supporting data for required environmental permits as well as documenting research, completing field analysis and providing technical support for all transportation projects.

In accordance with State and Federal regulations, the biologist identifies and delineates wetlands potentially impacted by proposed transportation construction and maintenance projects.  Evaluating wetland functions and values is a part of this position.  Another duty is to provide environmental resource information for Act 250, Corps of Engineers and Federal Highway Administration applications and documents.  The biologists performs extensive coordination on biological resource impacts with State and Federal agencies as well as suggesting measures to mitigate adverse impacts of proposed projects upon biological resources. The biologists also attend and testify at Act 250 and other public hearings and meetings.
